Almost everyone who's ever caulked a bathtub has had the same experience: it looks great for about three weeks, and then it starts peeling, graying, or pulling away from the tub at one end while the rest still looks fine. The instinct is to blame the caulk — buy a fancier tube next time, pay more, expect a better result. That's rarely where the problem actually is. Caulk failure is almost always a prep failure, and the caulk itself, cheap or expensive, is just the part that gets blamed for a surface it was never given a fair chance to bond to.

Old caulk has to actually be gone

The single most common mistake is caulking over caulk. A new bead laid on top of the remnants of an old one is bonding to old caulk, not to the tile or tub surface, and old caulk is exactly the unstable, half-adhered material you don't want as your new bead's foundation. Getting the old caulk fully out means more than scraping the visible bead — a plastic caulk removal tool or a stiff putty knife should get into the corner and pull every trace, including the thin film that's often left behind and easy to miss. Follow with rubbing alcohol on a rag to lift any residue the scraper left, especially in a shower or tub where soap film has had years to work its way into whatever gaps existed.

Dry means actually dry, not just not-dripping

Caulk needs a genuinely dry surface to bond to, and "dry" in a bathroom is a higher bar than it sounds. Moisture trapped in grout lines or hiding in a gap behind old caulk can keep a surface from being truly dry for a full day after it looks fine to the touch. The reliable approach is to do the full caulk removal, clean thoroughly, and then don't use that shower or tub for at least twenty-four hours before laying new caulk — not a popular answer in a one-bathroom house, but it's the difference between a bead that lasts a couple of years and one that's already lifting by the following month.

Match the caulk to the location

Not all caulk is doing the same job. A pure silicone caulk is the standard choice for the wet joint between a tub or shower and the surrounding tile — it stays flexible and sheds water well, which matters in a spot that flexes water against that seam thousands of times a year. A siliconized acrylic latex caulk is easier to smooth and paints well, which makes it the better pick for a joint like baseboard-to-wall or window trim that isn't submerged in water and benefits from being paintable to match the surrounding trim. Using the paintable latex kind in a wet shower joint is a common shortcut that fails early, because it doesn't handle constant water exposure the way silicone does. Check the tube's label for "kitchen and bath" or "100% silicone" for wet areas specifically.

The tape trick that makes it look professional

A clean bead is mostly about a steady hand and a small angle on the cut of the tube's tip — cut it smaller than feels natural, since it's easier to add more caulk than to clean up too much. But painter's tape run along both sides of the joint, laid just outside where the bead will sit, turns a shaky line into a crisp one: run the bead, smooth it with a wet finger or a caulk smoothing tool, and pull the tape immediately while the caulk is still wet, before it starts to skin over. Pulling the tape after the caulk has begun to set drags and tears the bead instead of leaving a clean edge.

Give it real cure time

Most caulks are dry to the touch within an hour but need a full twenty-four to forty-eight hours to fully cure before facing water, per the label — check it, because cure times do vary between products. Using the shower before that window closes is the second most common way a fresh, correctly applied bead fails early: it looks finished long before it's actually finished curing.

A caulk smoothing tool, a cheap plastic or silicone-tipped tool sold in most caulk aisles, does a more consistent job than a wet finger, especially in a corner where two beads meet. Keep a damp rag nearby for wiping the tool between passes, since caulk buildup on the tool itself will start dragging and tearing the bead the same way old tape does. None of this is complicated, but skipping it is exactly how a technically fine caulk job ends up looking amateur in the after-photo.

If the old caulk was discolored with black or pink mildew stains, address that before laying anything new — a diluted bleach solution or a household mildew cleaner, left to sit and then rinsed thoroughly, kills what's on the surface. Caulking directly over a mildew-stained surface without cleaning it first doesn't stop the growth underneath; it just gives it a fresh layer to work through again within a season, and the new bead often shows the same stain pattern within a few months as if nothing had been redone at all.

The job is 90% before the tube even opens

A caulk gun makes the visible ten percent of this job. The old caulk fully removed, the surface actually dry, the right formula for a wet versus dry location, and enough cure time before use — that's the part that decides whether the new bead is still doing its job in two years or peeling again in one. Slow down on the parts nobody sees in the after-photo, and the part everyone sees holds up.
